Mermaids

Trudy Cooper (artist-writer) and Doug Bayne (writer-artist) from Dead Numbat Productions, the self publishers of Platinum Grit, one of the best Australian comics ever, asked if I'd do a painting for their comic. You bet. I thought it would be fun to paint Jeremy and Nils, but to depict her as a mermaid, and still be true to their personalities and unusual relationship. Does Nils want to kiss or drown Jeremy?
This was painted for one of my best friends Colleen Doran who does the most magnificent comic series entitled A Distant Soil which is published by Image Comics. Painted for the back-cover of Images of a Distant Soil, it depicts Colleen Doran's characters, Seren and d'Mer (who are lovers) riding the backs of two mermen, Rynan and Jessur (who are also lovers) from BMP's up-and-coming new title Mermist Seas.
My first published colour painting and my first foray into self-publishing. This piece holds great significance for me. Published with an accompanying seven page illustrated story Unknown Sea in early 1992, it predates the mermaids I was to create for BMP's first American publisher.
If I can't buy it, I'll make it. Sculpting is part of what I do to make a living, but as a hobby it can fulfil the inadequacies that I find in the toy market. I've done other designs as well which I'd love to see as a toy line one day.
Created as the ad to announce BMP's new website. BMP's logo comes to life as our host and calls the lead mermaids from our three comic properties as well as the readers to join her.
