More Mermaids

The Swimming Lesson

I've always wanted to put two of my favourite mermaids from different universes into one amalgam piece without compromising either character's visual representation. That is, Ariel as an animation cel and Tilaweed as a painted image. The piece is titled The Swimming Lesson. Ariel is, of course, Copyright © and Trademark ™ Walt Disney Studios.

The Original WaveDancers (centrefold)

This is one of my favourite WaveDancer art pieces. It was my third painting on the series. All the original WaveDancer characters you'd be meeting in the first issue (excluding Brom and Reanafel) were there. The characters are in family or relationship groups, and many fans clued in early on the same-sex partners, Maron and Paffa.

Tilaweed

Tilaweed became a sort of mascot for the original WaveDancers and she had many admiring fans. I had mentioned in the first issue that Tilaweed was my idea of the perfect mermaid in elfin form. This piece was done as a gift for a close friend and was rendered mostly in Dr Martin Dyes. Since then, I only use the highly unstable Dr Martin Dyes for color roughs.

Merry Christmas Mermaid

Created as a greeting card for Christmas 1997 for all our friends and family. I had fun with The Disney style tail (with the waist fin) and the Aurora curly blond hair. The characters were painted on an animation cel with ripped colored paper as the backdrop. Though it's not on the art, this piece is Copyright © and Trademark ™ Jozef Szekeres 1997.

MerDawn

I had mentioned to Joe Linsner and Robb Horan four years ago that I'd love to do Dawn as a mermaid, and when the opportunity finally came up, I froze. Why? Because the MerDawn page required I paint rain in the Linsner Universe, and Joe had stated in his original card series that there is no rain in Linsner Land, for he had never seen it done well before, and wasn't ready to try himself. Talk about pressure. I love Joe's creation of Dawn, and enjoyed including some of the many symbols he uses to express Her. Dawn is a Copyright © and Trademark ™ of Joe Linsner 1999.

MerDawn Colour Roughs

These are the colour roughs I did prior to painting the final art for the MerDawn 6 page short back up story for Joe Linsner. Doing this helped me work out my color choices before committing to the larger work. I ended up changing some things from this color rough. Each of the six pages is about the size of a smaller sized post card.
