We’ll keep you posted on our upcoming workshops, seminars, and convention and festival appearances on this spot. |
Graphic novels are rapidly gaining recognition in the literary community for their accessibility, as well as their exciting and innovative content across all genres. This weekend workshop presented by BMP DIrectors Jozef Szekeres and Julie Ditrich will enable you to gain an understanding about the scope and versatility of the “comics” medium, which forms the foundation of visual narrative in graphic novels. You will learn:
What defines comics
The history of comics
The graphic novel format and categories
The vocabulary of comics (icons)
The language & conventions of comics (closure, gutters, word balloons, panel borders, transitions, time, movement)
Illustrating for comics (shots, pencilling, inking, colouring)
Writing for comics (visual storytelling, plotting & story structure, appealing to the senses, word/image combinations, characterisation, page breakdowns, script formats)
The profession of comics (deadlines & production schedules, contracts, protecting your rights, running a business, publishing proposals, resources).
The workshop will be both theoretical and practical, and participants will get an opportunity to create sequential art. You will need to bring pencils, pens, sharpener, ruler, rubber and A3 or A4 white paper.

Australian publishing consultant and literary agent Brian Cook will talk openly and frankly about publishers' expectations in regard to submissions from comics creators hoping to break into the commercial book world. That world is not purely and simply about the artistic work – there are other considerations such as the economics of publishing, synergy with a publisher's "list", and the potential publisher/creator relationship that need to be kept in mind. BMP Director and Australian Society of Authors Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio holder Julie Ditrich will follow up by discussing what information goes into the various components of a graphic novel proposal such as the covering letter, sample material and the preliminary marketing plan.

What is the ASA Comics/Graphic Novels Portfolio?
The portfolio is a special interest group that aims to provide industry support to Australian artists and writers currently working in the comics medium and, in particular, the graphic novel format. The major objectives of this new portfolio will be to:
(1) Protect and promote the professional interests of comics creators (both writers and artists);
(2) Form a professional community of active members who operate in this specialist discipline; and
(3) Liaise and cross-pollinate ideas with like-minded Australian and overseas organisations whose focus is on the promotion of the comics art form.
Who should attend this comics industry meeting?
Established and emerging writers, artists, pencillers, inkers, colourists and letterers working in the comics medium and its various formats (comics periodicals, graphic novels, zines, webcomics etc).
Why is it important to attend?
This is an opportunity to set the agenda for a new advocacy group looking after the professional interests and the rights of comics creators, and to find out the benefits of joining the ASA.
